At the Baltimore Center for Green Careers, we train Baltimore City residents for green jobs in brownfield remediation and weatherization and place them in full time jobs. Trainees earn industry-recognized certifications, learn employability skills, and receive case management and on the job training. Since 2009, 91% of our graduates have been placed in full-time employment earning between $12 and $20 per hour.

Aisha – BGCG Participant
Aisha first came to Civic Works as an AmeriCorps member. She enjoyed her time on the Community Lot Team, but she never considered pursuing a career in landscaping. What she really wanted to do was enroll in the brownfield remediation training offered at Civic Works’ Baltimore Center for Green Careers. The course teaches people how to safely clean up “brownfield” sites: properties previously used for industrial purposes that may be contaminated with hazardous wastes.
Aisha graduated from the program and earned certifications that allowed her to work with lead and asbestos. She joined a temp agency and worked for a number of different companies. She was gaining skills and networking, but there was something about her job that didn’t sit well with her. Safety was not a high priority for many of her employers, and Aisha had learned about the importance of safety and received OSHA certifications at Civic Works. She and a colleague decided to start their own environmental management company. They opened Lifeline Environmental Management in 2012.
Aisha’s company has a growing client list. Civic Works has supported their efforts by hiring Lifeline to help with the Clifton Mansion restoration. And now Aisha has hired graduates from the Baltimore Center for Green Careers and helped give them a new start.
