BALTIMORE – Volunteers gathered to clean up several properties in East Baltimore Monday.

The day of service was held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The volunteers did construction work, brush and trash removal and three different sites.

Several other days of service were held throughout the area, including a food donation day in Park Heights.

Civic Works made MLK Day a day on, not a day off.

Hundred of volunteers joined together to beautify the Proctor Street garden and participate in a neighborhood wide clean up Monday.

Volunteers built a walking path, put an edge around a garden bed and cleared an alley.

Jenny Katz, the Civic Works volunteer coordinator, said the importance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work cannot be overstated.

“We’re all here because we believe in his mission, his work, his legacy of service to our country, to making it a better place. So, I think really at the end of the day that’s why we’re all here.”

Children also got to get in on the fun. While volunteers worked outside, the kids got to paint guardian rocks and learn about urban gardening.
