Congrats to the winners of the first annual Amazing Race—Burns & Wilcox!

The Amazing Race is a teamwork-driven, service-oriented event that showcases the mission of Civic Works, the city’s premier service and volunteerism organization.  Event participants bond with their friends and co-workers, while enjoying a day of competition and pure fun.

During the Civic Works Amazing Race, team members race from one challenge to the next, along a competitive course. This year, they competed in the following categories:

  • Healthy Foods and Green Communities
  • Building Brighter Futures
  • Safe, Affordable Homes and Energy Savings

FAQs

What should we bring?

We recommend that you bring a small travel pouch or something in which to carry your cell phone and car keys. Your pants pockets might be just fine! You won’t need anything else, and we don’t recommend that you bring a purse or anything valuable that you would have to carry around. You will need to have your hands free, and be unencumbered, so you can tackle the Challenges!

How do we WIN?

Your team must navigate through all three Challenge Zones during our 3 1/2–hour course on Friday, May 12th. Your team may earn up to 100 points per Challenge Zone, or 300 total points. In addition, your team can earn 30 extra points by attending a Team Up & Serve session before the event on May 12th.
AND, you can earn extra points during your team’s Rest & Refuel Session, by playing lawn games and successfully answering trivia questions.
The Challenge Sessions are timed, so all the teams will finish at the same time. After all Sessions are complete, we will quickly identify the Top Three Teams with the highest scores. These three teams will go inside Clifton Mansion to face the Final Challenge. The first team to solve the Challenge will escape from the Mansion and do its Victory Dash out onto the Porch Stage, to the applause of the crowd!
Prizes will be awarded to the winning team and the two runner-up teams. There will also be a Social Media Award for the team that promotes the event most heavily on Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

What time should we arrive on event day?

The Team Captain should arrive by 11:30 a.m. and find your Team Navigator. The other team members may arrive by noon. Everyone will need to find parking, meet up at the team’s designated spot, get a t-shirt, use the restroom, grab a snack, and get instructions before the Kickoff takes place at 12:45.

What time will the event end?

The Challenges for all teams will end at 5:00 p.m. Then the Final Challenge for the Top Three Teams ends at 5:30 p.m. The Awards Ceremony for the winning team takes place at 5:30 p.m., and the Happy Hour will wrap up by 8:00 p.m.

Are meals provided at the Amazing Race?

We will not be providing lunch, so we encourage you to eat a hearty breakfast or early lunch before you come. We will provide plenty of high-protein snacks, fruit, and water throughout the afternoon, to keep you fueled up for the race.
Once the race is over, please join us for Baltimore’s Biggest Outdoor Happy Hour, where we will have a variety of food trucks to choose from, as well as beer and non-alcoholic drinks. Your team will receive tickets for food and beverages. Beyond this, you and your friends are welcome to purchase any food and beverages you like, directly from the vendors. Extra ticket packages for food and beverages will also be on sale ahead of time, and can be purchased by contacting Liberty Frank at lfrank@civicworks.com.

What if I am not very athletic?

You don’t have to be a super-athlete to compete in the Amazing Race. The Challenges range from moderately physical to intellectual. One team member may be better at a physical challenge, and another may be better at something else. You can switch off and take turns at things you each do best. If you and your team can solve problems, collaborate, get through an obstacle course, and run short distances, you have what it takes to compete and win.

May we invite our friends, family members, and colleagues to come watch?

Yes; we love spectators! Please let us know ahead of time if you have friends coming to watch, so we may accommodate them. You may also invite as many of your friends, family members, and colleagues to join us at 5:00 p.m. for Baltimore’s Biggest Outdoor Happy Hour, and for the awards ceremony. (Please note that alcoholic drinks will only be served to people age 21 and over, and we will have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available, as well.) For information on Happy Hour tickets or the event overall, please contact Liberty Frank at lfrank@civicworks.com.
